Travel with the rack & pinion railway - a train that takes you on a magical route that passes through the mountain from Diakofto to Kalavryta and we meet you on your arrival.
Kalavryta is a small and beautiful village in a valley of the Peloponnese that attracts tourists due to its ski center and its history as a village. In 1943 all the men of the village were killed by the Nazis and the town was burnt down. This is a constant reminder to the residents and the tourists alike of the importance of peace.
Not to be missed whilst visiting Kalavryta are its monasteries. The Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo (large cave) and the historical monastery of Agia Lavra, where the Greek Revolution of 1821 began.
We really enjoyed the trip last month. The train ride was fun, the gorge was just breathtaking, like an explosion of colors - rocks, trees, streams... Kalavryta is a cute but small town so walk around, have lunch, visit local museum and it was lovely to be able to visit the historical monasteries which are wonderful. All in all it was a great experience and we enjoyed it. Also, it's a bit different from what everyone assumes Greece is about - beaches! This trip was different, interesting and educational.
